Samuel Benin

Samuel Benin is the Acting Director for Africa in the Development Strategies and Governance Unit. He conducts research on national strategies and public investment for accelerating food systems transformation in Africa and provides analytical support to the African Union’s CAADP Biennial Review.

Bolster financial lifeline of livestock sector (Tribune India)

“The Kisan Credit Card (KCC) scheme was launched by the Union Government in 1998 with the aim of providing hassle-free credit to farmers for agricultural and allied activities,” writes Tribune India, but “several states with a substantial livestock population, including UP, West Bengal, Telangana, and Bihar, do not feature among the toppers in terms of sanctioned KCC.” 

The article mentions that a recent study by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) for eastern Indian states reports that access to KCC reduces the farmer’s dependency on moneylenders for borrowing credit by 25 percent.
